Race Results for June 19

What does exciting, sweating and winning, all have in common? If you guessed Eureka Downs, you would be correct. The races were exciting, the horses and trainers were sweating, and the spectators were winning prizes. Not only would you have been able to watch the horse races, a representative from Kansas Lottery was in the Turf Club giving instructions on how to play KENO. Those playing KENO, were able to win an array of prizes provided by the Kansas Lottery.
The first race was won by Lucky Oz, boy was he Lucky, ridden by David Hunt, trained by local Jose Ibarra and owned by JK Running Horses. Lucky Oz actually ran second, by Grand On Affair inferred with him in the stretch and was disqualified. The second race brought excitement from the horses. Extreme Lad was frisky in the saddling paddock, and jockey David Hunt decided not to ride him. After a jockey change, all three horses headed to the track. These were 2 year-old first time starters going 300 yards. Crossing the finish line in front was El Chapulin, ridden by Manual Vasquez, owned and trained by Agustin Aguilera from Wichita. Running second was Saint Lewis, ridden by Chris Melson, owned and trained by Tom Long of Virgil. The winning time on that race was 16.30. Manuel Vasquez also made his way to the winners circle in the third race, riding Royal I Con, owned and trained by Dev Beeson of Parson, KS. Streakin Mr. Red with Gary Wade in the irons race second. Streakin Mr. Red is owned by Tom Blasi and trained by Donald Davidson. Royal I Con race 300 yards in 16.05 seconds. Race four was a field of 3 year-olds running 250 yards. Bid O Win, owned and trained by Debra Boller and ridden to victory by Gary Wade, was greeted in the winners circle. This was Bid O Win's first race of the year. Racing fans should expect to see more of this gray race horse. Bid O Win completed the course in a time of 14.55. Go Mr Smooth Dude with Manuel Vasquez controlling the reins finished second. The last race on the card was going 6 furlongs. Owner/trainer Zack Ashlock, with jockey David Hunt aboard Smashingly Ashley, was able to get their picture taken. Smashingly Ashley completed the course in 1:17.4.
There will be no races on June 26th. The next race day is July 4th. The doors open at 11:30 and the first race will run at 1:00.

Day 3 of the Season

Eureka Downs completed another day of non-parimutuel racing on June 12th. With the help of horse racing fans, hard working volunteers, and the horseman, everything went very smoothly.

The first two races were thoroughbred races . The first race was going 4 furlongs and was won by Regal Indian. This horse is trained by local Jose Ibarra and owned by JK Running horses. Regal Indian was ridden to victory by David Hunt. The time on this race was 47.1. The next race was also going 4 furlongs, in a time of 47.4. Thundering Saracco was the winning horse, with Trainer Joe Thomas and owner Longton Explorations from Fredonia making their way to the winner circle. Jockey Manual Vasquez was in control of the reins on Thurdering Saracco.

Race 3 was going 330 yards and was won by Snow Kan, owned and trained by Donald Davidson. Jockey Manuel Vaszuez was again taken to the winners circle to have his picture taken. The field of 4 horses completed the course in 17.58 seconds. The remaining order of finish: One High Lady (Hunt/Hunt/Burkhart), Cashews Kid (Wade/Rutland/Lindsey) and MC Wake Up Call (Melson/Davidson,Arguilera). Race 4 on the card was a group of 2 year old maiden horses running 250 yards. The winner was Myas Gale, ridden by Gary Wade, owned and trained by Jake Eck of Goddard, KS. Myas Gale rane the distance in 14.23 seconds. In this race, jockey Manuel Vasquez was unable to hold Sea Hunter in a straight line and the horse was disqualified and placed third. This horse interfered with the racing of Stormy Corona.

Race 5 brought another group of 2 year olds running 250 yards. The winner, My Paparazzi, ridden by David Hunt, and trained by Sue Hunt was victorious. My Paparazzi completed the course in 14.06 seconds.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 19th to attend the horse races. Post time is at 1:00 and the doors open at 11:30.

If you are not sure if you would drive 100 miles to watch the horses run, you need to contact your Senator/Representative. The gaming bill was defeated 19-20 in Topeka when the legislature was in process. I would love to have wagering at Eureka Downs. Currently there is NO where in the state of KS to watch/wager on horse/dog racing. The gaming bill would have provided 5200 jobs to the state, plus $40 million dollars to the state, but legislatures voted to raise taxes. So, come and enjoy an afternoon of a sport that have been around for 138 years AND contact your local Senator and Representative.

Horse racing at Eureka Downs

On May 29th, Eureka Downs will host Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the race meet will be non-parimutuel. No wagering will be allowed, but what will be allowed is: people having fun, spectators enjoying the sun, eating hot dogs and drinking lemonade, and most of all, watching the horse races. Heck, you might be able to bet your neighbor a hot dog or coke. Who knows, you might not have to pay for lunch.

Did the State of Kansas let you down by deciding to raise your taxes instead of passing the new gaming bill that would keep horse and dog tracks open and contributing millions to the State's coffers? Don't worry...Eureka Downs hasn't let you down. You can still get your fill of live Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing during 2010. We may not be able to offer pari-mutuel betting but we can still offer all the great family fun that comes with life horse racing. The 2010 season kicks off this Saturday May, 29 and continues June 5, 12, 19, July 3, 4, 17, 24, 25, and 31. Post time is 1:00pm and the gates open at 11:30am so come early and get close parking as the lot has been known to fill up fast.

Experience the anticipation of the race at the paddock as you watch the horses being saddled and the jockeys mounting up. Feel the tension rise as the pony horses parade horse and rider in front of the grandstands. When the bell rings, the starting gates fly back, and the announcers voice booms from the speakers "AND THEY ARE OFF" you better have already picked your spot on the fence at the finish line because viewing from track side gets you so close to the action you can feel the energy as the horses thunder by.

So being track side isn't your style... that's ok too as Eureka Downs offers admission to the smoke free, air conditioned Turf Club with a birds eye view of the entire track for only $20. Great food and drinks are served in both the Turf Club and the concourse below. Live video streams in to the concourse and the Braden Room if you want a break from the outside action, but trust me... when you can be so close to it all there is no other place you will want to be.

2010 RACE SEASON IS HERE!!!

It is official.....Eureka Downs will have live Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred races in 2010! There will be no parimutuel betting but the excitement of live horses racing is still a huge draw. Races will be held on:

May 29
June 5, 12, 19
July 3, 4, 17, 24, 25 and 31

Gates open at 11:30am and post time is 1:00pm.

Admission is $7 for adults, Kids under 14 and Senior Citizens are $5. KQHRA members can get in for $5 by showing their membership card.

10 Day passes can be purchased for $55.

Seating is available in the air conditioned smoke free Turf Club for $20.

2010 Kansas Jackpot Futurity

The Kansas Quarter Horse Racing Association (KQHRA), in coordination with Will Rogers Downs and the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA), has announced a change in the dates for the running of the 2010 Kansas Jackpot Futurity RG3. Due to a shift of quarter horse racing dates at Will Rogers Downs, trials for the $60,000 added race for two year olds has been moved to September 4. The finals will not be run on September 18, which coincides with opening weekend of a 28 day meet for Quarter horses, Paints, and Appaloosas at the Claremore, Oklahoma track.
"The board members of the OQHRA are to be commended for their willingness to keep the Jackpot program alive," said KQHRA president Robert Rodgers. "We hope our race can add to an already very strong racing schedule for horseman of the mid-west." Gearing UP!

As we make the final turn onto the home stretch most people may think we are winding down the racing season at Eureka Downs. On the contrary we are gearing up for the grand finale! July 4th might be the last day for the 2009 racing season at Eureka Downs but may just very well be the biggest day yet. As families gather to celebrate our Nations Independence they also gather to celebrate the rich tradition of horse racing on Independence Day. The City of Eureka will be alive with numerous things to do and watch. In the afternoon stop by Eureka Downs and then stay for the fireworks display in evening at the City Park. If you have been missing down-home family fun on the 4th of July because the big city can't offer it, come to Eureka where family fun is a high priority. Rainy Day

On June 20 Eureka experienced enough rain to make the race track unsafe for both horses and riders. Eureka Downs wants to extend it's sincerest apologies for having to cancel the races after the first few; however, it is our first responsibility to look after the welfare of the people and animals that bring great horse racing to Kansas. It has been a long time since something such as this has happened. We truly appreciate your patronage at Eureka Downs and we want to make it up to you as best we can. If you happened to have a table booked in the Turf Club on June 20 please contact us again and let us know if there is an alternative date we can reschedule your table for. Additionally we are working out the details on how to make it up to the general admission folks as well. Hold on to your programs from the 20th if you still have them as that may be your ticket in the door. More details will be available soon.

Once again, we apologize for an inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we try to make the best of a less than ideal situation.

3 of a Kind

This Saturday there will be three rather prestigious ladies roaming the corridors of Eureka Downs. All three have a passion for rural Kansas, all three have a passion for the Flint Hills, and Eureka Downs. The first is Marci Penner with the Kansas Sampler Foundation. She had devoted her life to educating people of the splendor of rural Kansas and all it has to offer. The second is Linda Craighead the Executive Director of the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition. She is dedicated to promoting the Flint Hills and the countless tourism opportunities that exist with in. Last but not least is the youngest of the three at 10 years old. Her name is Hannah Zimmers and she is the 2009 Flint Hills Rodeo Princess. The Flint Hills Rodeo may be in Strong City but her home is in Reece, Kansas. She is an outstanding little lady from Greenwood County that loves horses and rodeo. She will be helping present awards in the winners circle and sign autographs. These three think Eureka Downs is the place to be this Saturday. How about you? Admission is only $3 per adult and kids under 15 get in free with an adult paid admission. It is a great way to spend the day so race on in to Eureka downs.

We have been asked if Eureka Downs has any outside signals for simulcast betting. Unfortunately we don't have the capability this year. We have had it in years past and hope someday to get it back again. You are still welcome to bet on live Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred races by attending the remaining races on June 20, 21, 27, 28 and July 4 at Eureka Downs. It is a fun, family friendly way to spend the day without breaking the bank.

Three Stellar Days

The first three days of the 2009 racing season have shown that Eureka Downs is the place to be! All three days showed record attendance and wagering. We are just past the quarter post on this years season but nowhere close to the home stretch. There are still 7 race days left to load up the family and watch live horse racing. This Saturday, June 13th, marks the beginning of races on both Saturday and Sunday. The 13th is Breast Cancer Awareness day so if you are planning to attend you can show your support by wearing pink. The 14th is Aviation Day and a courtesy shuttle will be available to transport you from the airport to the Downs if you are coming by air. Day 3 Approaching

Opening Day at Eureka Downs proved to be an amazing sight with nearly 1,000 people in attendance. People came from miles around to celebrate Memorial Day at the race track. To get good parking you had to come early but even if you had to walk from the back of the parking it was not so bad as the weather was absolutely beautiful. Day two, May 30, proved to be a great turn out as well. Celebration was in the air as Eureka Days was in full swing. The Shrine Oriental Band provided entertainment at the track. Now we are looking towards day 3, June 6, at the Downs. We are dedicating the day to motorcycle riders so if that's you, come on down; if its not you come anyway as we have plenty of room. In addition a special presentation will be made to Sgt. Ryan Olson in honor of his service to this great Nation.

Don't miss out!! The gates open at 11:30am and post time is at 12:30pm. A seven race card gives you a full afternoon of great Live Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing. Admission is $3 for adults and kids under 15 get in free. Concessions, drinks and pari-mutual betting are also offered so... Head on Down to Eureka Downs!!

Band for June 27th

Head on down to Eureka Downs on June 27th to take in the races and listen to music by Cedar Creek Crossing, a local bluegrass band. Cedar Creek Crossing will be playing in the concourse prior to the races and between races. Gates open at 11:45am and post time is 12:30pm. Eureka Downs is getting ready to kick off its 137th year of racing-yes, you heard it straight from the horse’s mouth. Eureka will be having 10 DAYS of Live Horse RACING. Our opening day is Monday, May 25th, Memorial Day. Doors open at 11:45, with racing time set at 12:30 p.m. Quarter horse and thoroughbred horses make up our seven race card. Mark your calendar for racing days: May 25th, May 30th, June 6th, June 13-14, June 20-21, June 27-28 and July 4th. Admission fee is $3 and children are free. Eureka Downs has outdoor stadium seating or you can book a table in the air conditioned non-smoking Turf Club, call (620)583-5528. Concessions stand is available. Come for a fun afternoon at the Racing Capital of Kansas.
